Nancy’s Story:

From the earliest of ages, Nancy Janik loved the excitement of sports. At the time, there were no diving classes offered in the area, so Janik’s parents enrolled her sisters and her into a diving class at Oxnard High School. Many hours were spent in the car trekking to Oxnard, Santa Monica, and Northridge as her parents strove to give Janik the opportunity to take her talent to the next level. That sacrifice paid off. At the age of 14, she went on to win her first National Diving Championships which were televised nationally on NBC sports.

At the age of 16, she qualified to compete in the Senior National Diving Championships and placed 3rd against divers many years older. These National Championships qualified Janik to compete in two international competitions in Rostock, East Germany and Minsk, Russia the following year. She placed 5th in the world at the Rostock Invitational and went on to compete nationally and internationally for the next 12 years. Some of her numerous diving accomplishments include:

  • California State Champion (4 years in a row)
  • 6 time Jr. Olympic National Diving Champion
  • 8 time member of the United States National Diving Team
  • United States Olympic Trials Finalist
  • United States Olympic Sports Festival Finalist
  • World Championship Trials Finalist
  • Full Ride Scholarship to Pepperdine University
  • Many are surprised when Janik mentions that she competed on the Men’s team at Pepperdine, but for Janik, her male competitors just made her tougher. In fact, she won two large invitationals against the guys making a statement to just how talented she was.

Janik retired from diving after the 1988 Olympic Trials; however after taking three years off she quite literaly jumped back in to competition in 1991 and again qualified for the United States National Diving team and given the opportunity to once again compete internationally. She officially retired in 1994 when she found out she was pregnant with her first born daughter, Janae.  Ironically, that same daughter followed in her mom’s footsteps and under Nancy Janik’s coaching went on to claim many accolades of her own including, 3 time CIF champion, AAU National Champion, qualified 6 times to compete at the National level, and was offered numerous full ride scholarship offers from universities around the country. Like mother, like daughter.

Nancy’s Coaching Style:

Nancy Janik has a love and passion for the sport of diving that will last a lifetime and she has passed that love on to countless kids who have come through her program. The small class size that Janik Divers offers combined with top notch coaching cannot be found anywhere else and students will benefit from Janik’s enthusiasm and strong technical coaching.  But most of all she wants kids to have fun, encourage them to reach for new heights and see how far they can go.
